The Quarry Lane shawl cardigan is a top-down, practically seamless raglan design featuring both lace and textural elements. Its cozy, high shawl collar and easy fit make it the ideal “throw-on” layer for a chilly office or for tasks that take you into the cold.
Construction
The cardigan begins with provisional cast-on of the collar at centre back, then each side worked separately to the shoulder front. Stitches for the fronts, raglan bands, sleeves, and back are then picked up along the lower collar edge to form the yoke, which is worked flat with raglan and bust shaping, then separated for the body and sleeves. The raglan eyelet ribs are extended and bound off together at each underarm; the lower edge is seamed to the body (the only seams in this design!) and the upper edge added to the sleeve with a few picked up stitches.
Inspiration
The Quarry Lane shawl cardigan is inspired by the grindstone quarrying industry that once flourished along the Bay of Fundy. Try to imagine – the basket rib pattern is the stony terrain; the eyelet ribs, the cuts and holes left in the rock; and the fern lace, the overgrowth that often conceals such abandoned sites.
