Luckenbooths, named after the locked booths from which they were sold in Edinburgh, are charms or brooches that are exchanged as love tokens. Mary Queen of Scots is said to have received one at her engagement to Lord Darnley. My eldest brother visited Scotland when I was child, and he sent me a replica of her luckenbooth, which I still wear today. It was sewn to the inside of my wedding gown for luck, and later, my babies wore it pinned to their shawls for health. The charm has become both talisman and trademark to me; so much a part of my identity that it had to be included in my collection.
