Queenslander Eyelet Lace
This nearly-lost reversible edging is from the Saturday, 11 May 1912 edition of The Queenslander, a weekly newspaper in Australia. Although the pattern was digitized by the State Library of Queensland, letters on the left edge of the pattern were illegible blobs. I eventually figured out what the missing letters were and what “s” meant (purl!). The edging has a 12-row repeat and the stitch count varies between 17 and 20 stitches. The hardest part is working 3 stitches in a “YO3” after rows 1 and 7.
The swatch is 2.5 inches at its widest when blocked to gauge. Gauge is not important here.
Skills needed: cast on, knit, ktbl: knit through the back loop, purl, yarn over twice (YO2), yarn over 3 times (YO3), SSK, k2tog, p2tog and bind off in knit stitch.
Gauge is not important in this pattern. Any block-able yarn/thread will work. Make a swatch to check gauge and appearance.
35 yards of #10 crochet thread will make 10 inches of this edging at stated gauge.
