Quiet Spot Shawl
A Quiet Spot Shawl is an easy knitting project for those times when you’re binge-watching a favorite podcast or series. It alternates eyelet and stockinette sections using 3 colors of yarn. The 4-row edging is knitted simultaneously and falls along one side of the asymmetric triangle shape. The border section at the end adds a subtle texture with seed stitches thrown into the mix.
Named after a section of Central Park in New York City that is a designated quiet area, this fingering-weight project works well with solids or speckles--or a combination of both!
Construction: This shawl starts with a quick 3-stitch cast-on that grows with each right-side row. The easy-to-memorize edging is worked on the “other side” of a stitch marker and adds an interesting detail. Simple charts for the eyelet and the edging are provided, although my test knitters found the written directions were easy enough to follow without them.
Finished Size: One size of 102.5 inches (260 cm) wingspan with a maximum depth of 25 inches (63 cm), depending on the thickness and stretchiness of your yarn.
Yarn Requirements (samples shown, top to bottom, use the following):
- (green/autumnal colors version) (A) Greta and the Fibers Socks Premium Chispas in “Lilium”; (B) Nooch Fiber Midtown Sock in “Bumble”; and (C) Crooked Kitchen Yarn Merinoh! in “Rooted”
- (pink/light colors version) all Hedgehog Fibers yarn (A) Sock Yarn in “Bramble”; (B) Sporty Merino in “Teacup”; (C) Sock Yarn in “Film Noir”
Needles: US size 5 / 3.75 mm (16” / 40 cm; 20” / 50 cm) circular needles.
Gauge: Gauge is not crucial to this pattern, but it will affect yarn usage and the finished size, so I recommend knitting a gauge swatch: 20 sts / 30 rows = 4” (10 cm) square in stockinette.
This shawl has been test knitted.
