In a world of neon and noise, it’s good to spend time walking the quiet ways. A squishy rustic yarn, gentle texture, and easy botanical lace combine to create an easy-to-wear wide triangle shawl you’ll want to wrap up in all year round. Find your favourite needles, and embrace the natural, the soft, the quiet.

Notes

Quiet Ways is worked from the top down, with increases on both the outer edges and on either side of the centre spine. The shawl is finished with an applied lace border which binds off the body stitches as you go.

(A video tutorial for working the shawl’s texture stitch.)

Yarn

Brooklyn Tweed Loft 50g 251m/275yd in ‘Camper’ (5 skeins). Actual yardage used in sample: 1105m/1209yd (inclusive of optional tassels).

Approximate actual yardage for sample shawl body: 625m/684yd.
Approximate actual yardage for sample lace border: 400m/438yd.

If substituting yarn, select at least 1200m/1312yd of fingering weight wool yarn. Yardage and finished measurements may vary according to yarn choice and individual gauge.

Needles & Notions

100cm/40” circular needle (to accommodate large number of stitches; shawl is worked flat) in sizes 4mm/US6, or as required to meet gauge, and 5mm/US8, or two sizes larger than smaller gauge-appropriate needle.

Stitch markers x 3; tapestry needle; large surface and pins/wires for wet-blocking finished shawl. Optional for tassels: piece of card approximately 17cm tall; scissors.

Finished measurements

Wingspan: 80”/203cm
Depth: 28”/71cm

Confident knitters will be able to easily modify shawl size by working fewer or more pattern repeats.

Measurements taken after wet-blocking, from relaxed fabric.
