Quilts of Hope Square 1
Blankets, quilts, coverings… a piece of fabric, but wrapped around someone can become something magical.
A silver blanket given to a marathon runner brings warmth
A woollen blanket to a homeless man can bring comfort
A blanket to a child can be security
The project takes this idea and the love of community crafting to make quilts and blankets of Hope.
Each quilt is made up of squares, made by people from around the world. These squares (sewn, knitted and crocheted) include messages of hope or decorated with heart shapes, are posted to Leeds, West Yorkshire. Then turned into quilts, the finished quilt is then given to a charity or community that works with vulnerable people.
The first quilt is being made for the Joanna project (www.joannaproject.co.uk) who work with women in Leeds Red Light area. It is our hope, that the quilt can be used at times when a woman is in distress, when human touch is too much, but the blanket can be placed over the woman and allow her to know there are many people standing with her.
Our first knitted/crocheted blanket is going to the Salvation Army Human Trafficking unit, who transport people rescued from slavery across the UK to safe houses. These people, often children and often not English speakers have a journey of many hours. We hope these blankets will provide some form of comfort on those journeys.
We hope you will join us in making a square (or two) and helping us being hope to others.
