Quinquesyllable Infinity Scarf
About this design
How I love this word. It rolls off the tongue with a mix of hard and soft sounds. Not only does this word sound great, its meaning is also a gentle joke. Quinquesyllable means “a word with five syllables” and … (cue silent laugher) … the word itself has five syllables!
I chose this name because this design is all about multiples of the number five. There are five stitches in the rolled i-cord edges, the total number of stitches is a multiple of five and the short row increments are done in five-stitch bites.
This design features a blend of simple garter stitch coupled with short rows to give the pattern some horizontal and biased elements that confuse the eye. I’ve used a magic ball as my colour A and paired it with a solid, contrasting colour to really make the diagonal lines in the design pop.
My 18-page Magic Ball Musings information sheet is included with your pattern and includes information on:
- Yarn weight
- Yarn composition
- Yarn colour
- Yarn lengths
- Yarn joining options
- Sourcing your yarns
- Creating and using your magic ball
If you can’t be bothered making a magic ball, or you’ve got some multi-dyed yarn or bits and bobs of stash yarn, then this Infinity Scarf will fit the bill for using up leftovers to make a bright, colourful and very warm winter accessory for yourself or someone you care about.
Size
One size fits all. Finished dimensions 157.5 cm/62 in circumference and 19 cm/7.5 in width.
Tension
Approximately 19 st x 36 rows over 10 cm/4 in using garter stitch in a blocked swatch, using 4.5 mm (US size 7, UK size 7) straight needles. A close match for tension is not super critical for this pattern. However, if your gauge is significantly different, move up or down a needle size and swatch one more time. Also, you may find that you use more or less yarn if your gauge is significantly different.
Yarn
Colour A: Approximately 135 g/4.8 oz. of any double knit/8 ply yarn (roughly equivalent to 286 m/313 yds.) in either a magic ball (see Construction Notes and References Section) or a multi-dye yarn or small amounts of leftover yarn.
Colour B: Approximately 75 g/2.7 oz. of any double knit/8 ply yarn (roughly equivalent to 135 m/147 yds.) in a solid, contrasting colour.
The sample Quinquesyllable Infinity Scarf has been knitted with a Magic Ball (approx 135 g/4.8 oz.) using shades of green from my stash and 1½ skeins of Shepherd Colour for Me 8 ply 100% pure new wool in shade number 4988.
Needles
4.5 mm (US size 7, UK size 7) straight needles.
Notions
Tapestry/darning needle.
Waste yarn in a contrasting colour.
The Pattern
This pattern includes written instructions and links to video tutorials for most of the techniques used in the design.
