he stranded motif on the body of this hat was inspired by a wrought iron grille from the Pavilion of the “Quotidian,” at the Exposition of the Decorative Arts in Paris, in 1925—the exhibition which gave rise to the term “Art Deco.”

In addition to the stranded pattern, this hat has a number of interesting details: a double rolled edge, garter stitch earflaps, and corkscrew tassels (any or all of which may be easily omitted). Quotidiana is worked in the round from the bottom up, with the contrast rolled edge and earflaps added afterward using picked up stitches (no sewing required). Shown in gently contrasting yarn colors, which give the stranded pattern a shadowy effect, this hat would also be striking worked in two strongly contrasting colors.

“Quotidian” can mean “mundane” or “ordinary”; it can also mean simply “daily,” as in something that is part of daily life. I’d like to think that the combination of details makes Quotidiana more than mundane; sized in small, medium and large, suitable for both children and adults, this hat can certainly become part of your daily cold-weather life.

Finished Size: 16 3/4 (18 3/4, 21)“/42.5 (48, 53.5) cm circumference, measured at stranded section of hat (rolled brim spreads slightly, so that circumference at edge is approx 1”/2.5 cm larger), to fit toddlers, larger children, and adults. Height of hat is approximately 8 (8 1/2, 9)”/20.5 (21.5, 23) cm; crown of hat will fold over slightly (it is not designed to fit closely to the top of the head). Shown in size 21”/53.5 cm.

Materials: Yarn: Cascade Yarns Superwash 220, 100% superwash wool, 220 yds (201 m)/100 g skein, Main Color (MC) #1910 aqua, 1 (1, 1) skein, Contrast Color (CC) #862 cocoa, 1 skein (1, 1).

If substituting yarn: MC, approx 150 (175, 200) yds/140 (160, 185) m; CC, approx 75 (90, 100) yds/70 (85, 95) m.

Needles: US size 6/4 mm: 20” circular and set of double-pointed (dp) needles. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain the correct gauge.

Notions: 1 stitch marker; tapestry needle.

Gauge: 21 sts/25 rnds to 4”/10 cm in stranded pattern. 22 sts/28 rnds to 4”/10 cm in stockinette stitch. Stranded pattern gauge is more important for this project. Measure gauge on blocked swatch.

Notes: For most knitters, stranded pattern gauge is slightly tighter than one-color stockinette stitch gauge. For this pattern, this difference is not crucial, since the stranded portion of the hat extends almost to the crown of the head.
