Rainbow Blue Chullo
This is the fifth in a series of hats designed during the coronavirus pandemic of 2020.
The complete series includes one hat in each colour of the rainbow, a symbol representing hope during a dark time in our lives, made bearable by the spirit of resilience and fellow feeling of family, friends, neighbours and complete strangers. For me, the chullo conjures up fond memories of a remarkable holiday some years ago spent with the lovely people of Peru.
Knit in 4 ply yarn, the chullo has ear flaps which are knit flat and joined to the main body of the hat which is then continued in the round. The hat needs to be lined, either in full or with earflaps only. The optional pompoms are attached to the ear flaps with a twisted cord.
Instructions are given for 2 sizes –small/medium and medium/large.
Please read this note as tension in fair isle knitting can be problematic
You will only get the sizes above if you knit to the same tension (US gauge) as me. I tried this design in various 4 ply (fingering) yarns and got very different tensions, therefore very different finished sizes. The yarn I chose, because of its beautiful handle, was Drops Nord. This is described in different places as 3 ply (light fingering), 4 ply (fingering) and sport! For me and many other Ravelers, it did not knit to the same tension as the manufacturers state.
Just to add to the mix, most people knit fair isle patterns to a different tension than they do stocking stitch – in most cases, slightly tighter. This is why the lining is knit on a smaller needle than the outer layer. I have given my tension in both stocking stitch and in pattern. You may have to use different needle sizes from me in order to gain the correct tension with whichever yarn you choose.
