Let’s start with a few notes!
You will need two bobbins/balls of each color. This project is fairly small so you won’t need much of each color but you could buy two skeins of each color if you don’t want to mess with winding balls and having short scraps left over.
You can start with any color. Really! It makes no difference which color you start with so long as you keep everything in the order you choose. For the purpose of these instructions I will be starting with purple and working backwards through the color pattern.
As with all crochet, you will work your stitches from right to left. But when it is time to work with a new color you will drop your current color and move to the color to the right. Each time you move to the next color you will be able to work more stitches than you could with the previous round. It’s very important to keep track of where you are within each color! This is not the type of pattern that you can amble mindlessly through!
When I say to drop your color you can choose to pull the loop on the hook long and simply drop it or you can carefully remove your hook and place a stitch marker. The choice is entirely yours!
As you work you will be turning your project. Your yarn will get twisted. It’s ok! Don’t mess with it! After each round simply spin your work one rotation clockwise to undo the twisted yarn.
There are a number of ways you can start the center of your sun-catcher. You can use a chained circle, a magic circle, or a steel hoop. For this tutorial I’ll be using a hoop.
Stitch terms I will use in this tutorial:
sc: single crochet
ch: chain
dc: double crochet
hdc: half double crochet
Granny stitch: 3 dc in same space
Increase: 2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc all in same space
Ok, I think we are ready to go!
