Raindrop Heel Socks
This is a sock calculator, that is designed to custom fit a sock to your own measurements and gauge. It is intended as a template and designing tool.
The first page, which is linked, is for the calculator. You will need to take measurements (there is a drawing showing where to take them on your foot), and enter the measured gauge that your own needle and yarn combination are giving you. This calculator will work from yarn from fingering to aran weight.
If you’re using fingering weight sock yarn, you’ll likely need 100g. If you’re using a heavier weight sock yarn or are planning on adding a yardage-intensive stitch pattern to the template, I would recommend budgeting 50g extra as insurance.
This calculator is part of a blog series on how to knit socks. As such, there is a link to a 5 part tutorial on the calculator, in which each section of the sock is discussed at length. Photographs showing the sock at each stage are linked in these tutorials, which also include a discussion of why each step is taken and how it contributes to the overall sock. This blog series will also show you how to use the calculator to design your own custom socks.
The gusset method for the Raindrop sock is a modification that I haven’t seen before, and so am claiming it as an “unvention”. It results in the “raindrop” shaped heel that is where the sock gets its name from, and is an easy way to provide quick arch shaping to any heel-flap method. If you’ve come across it before, please let me know -- I don’t want to claim credit for something that is already out there!
