Rainy Day Mitts
These Mitts are inspired by my love of the Pacific Northwest. For me, cloudy days and rainstorms are uplifting and beautiful, so I created a motif celebrating those things. The mitts feature lace-bordered umbrellas with garter stitch canopies framed by contrasting ribbing. The seed stitch under the umbrellas reminds me of raindrops bouncing off pavement. Curl up somewhere warm and knit yourself a rainy day!
Yarn: Worsted weight, Main Color: approx. 56 yds (51 m), Contrasting Color: approx. 22 yds (20 m).
Shown in:
Main Color: Mrs. Crosby Likes to Play Steamer Trunk, Colorway Midnight Aubergine. 100% Superwash Merino Wool, approximately 164 yds per skein.
Contrasting Color: Mrs. Crosby Likes to Play Steamer Trunk, Colorway Submarine. 100% Superwash Merino Wool, approximately 164 yds per skein.
Needles: 1 set of U.S. size 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed needles.
Optional extra needles: 1 set of U.S. Size 6 (4.0 mm) or 1 set of U.S. Size 5 (3.75 mm) double pointed needles for ribbing. I personally don’t use a smaller needle for ribbing, and the sample shown doesn’t use one, but I know a lot of knitters prefer to use a smaller ribbing needle.
Gauge: 17 stitches and 31 rounds in stockinette, worked in the round and unblocked = 4” x 4” (10 cm x10 cm).
Notions: Locking stitch marker, tapestry needle.
Finished Measurements:
Length: 6” (15 cm) long.
Hand Circumference, measured above the thumb: Size Small = 6.5” (16.5 cm). Size Large = 7” (18 cm).
The mitts are meant to be worn with 1-2” (2.5-5 cm) of negative ease, meaning Size Large stretches to fit a hand circumference of 9” (23 cm).
Sample Shown is Size Small on a 6.5” (16.5 cm) circumference display.
Techniques Used: Decreases, yarn overs, changing stitch counts
