My rainy day throw was imagined and designed over a very lazy Christmas holiday spent lounging on the couch, fire on, TV on, chocolate, wine, no visitors, no distractions; just lots of time to do lots of crochet!! I wanted to make a smallish throw for snuggling up in front of the TV, or for when I’m crocheting on the couch (with, or without the TV on!) and just need something to pop over my knees or round my shoulders.

Like me, if you crochet (or knit), you’ve probably got yarns you bought with great plans for making something or you had no idea what you were going to make, but fell in love and just had to have it. And then there’s the baskets full of all the little scraps you keep, thinking they’ll come in handy one day! Well, more often than not I change my mind, I never get round to it, and those teeny tiny bits of yarn I insist on keeping rarely come in handy! So the plan was to design something to try and use up some of the yarn I’ve been saving for a rainy day!

I tried to use up a lot of the 4ply and double knit yarns I happened to have, but bought a few new ones along the way. Colour was more important to me than sticking to the same weight, so if the finer yarns were too fine I just used two strands as one, or plied them with another fine yarn to create new colours and stripey effects! I also got away with some lighter Aran weights!

You’ll need 3 different yarns for the circles but won’t need much of any of them. You’ll also need a main colour to complete the squares, for joining and the border. I haven’t given quantities because it takes what it takes to make the throw and the amount of yarn you’ll need will depend on what size you’re making! The principle is to use up what you have, or what you buy along the way, and not to worry too much about running out of a colour, or everything matching perfectly!

Only basic skills are required including forming magic rings, SC, HDC and puffs (US Crochet Terms) and the zipper joining method; the tutorial gives full instructions as well as lots of images and tips. Ask a Question if you’d like to know more before trying.
