Pattern Notes:
Latvians do not say they embroider or weave or knit patterns, they use the same word as for writing- raksti. So you “write” a shirt or “write” a woven belt, because that is the written language that existed eons before Gothic script came to Latvia with the crusaders. Raksti can also be the path of an animals footprints, the rhythm of sounds. Raksti tell a story. The master weavers of Lielvārde are known for their epic several meters long woven belts where the intricate patterns are ever changing and tell the story of the origins of the universe, the big bang, my inspiration for this hat. I topped that with a sun pattern reminiscent of the crystal baubles from Nica’s crown.
The first time I knit an extremely complex Latvian pattern I was stunned that there were several rows where the color changes were 3, 3, 3, 3, 3… I mentioned this to a friend and she said something like; that’s so that you can have a conversation with God/be at one with the universe/meditate/rest your mind, do whatever works for you. There are lots of segments of 3, 3, 3, 3, 3, in this extremely complex hat pattern. Enjoy.
