Raphael - Cherubs
The Sistine Madonna, from which these cherubs were taken, was painted between 1513 and 1516 and epitomize the theatrical feel of much of Raphael’s work The picture displays a are degree of tenderness and incorporates humorous details such as the bemused cherubs, which are among the most charming characters to be found in Renaissance painting.
The cherubs have been knitted in chunky wool to give them a “chubby” look and the pale grey, white and camel dyes of this pure fiber give a subtle effect to the overall design.
