I really love cable patterns, but have always found the wrong side a little disappointing in appearance, especially for projects such as blankets, where both sides are constantly exposed.

So after a bit of thinking and research, I have come up with this completely reversible cable braid blanket pattern.
It is not any more challenging than a regular cable pattern, but a lot more satisfying in the result.
I called it Rapunzel’s Surprise, as it features long braids, and lots of them, which are reversible!!
Using chunky yarn, it knits up quickly and is nice and squishy.

It looks the same on both sides and comes in 3 sizes, as well as instructions on how to make it any size you like.

Sizes:
Baby Cradle Blanket: 22” x 31” or 56 cm x 79 cm
Newborn Receiving Blanket: 29” x 36” or 74 cm x 92 cm
Lap Size Blanket: 36”x 42” or 92 cm x 107 cm

Materials:
Chunky Weight Yarn
I used Stylecraft Special for Babies Chunky, which can be machine washed, as well as tumble dried, perfect for mothers and babies alike.

You will need approx. 400 (600, 800) g but it depends on your choice of yarn, if in doubt, get an extra ball or two.

Tension/ Gauge: 14 sts and 20 rows make 10 cm (4”) square in stockinette stitch. Note that the cable pattern will require a lot more sts (20) to achieve the 10 cm or 4” square.

Knitting needles: The blanket is knit flat, but due to the large number of stitches, I recommend you use circulars, at least 60 cm or 24” long in size 6 mm ( US 10).

Cable needle or a short DPN in size 6 mm (US 10)
