Ravellenics Afghan - Household Event
This afghan square is part of a 16 square lapghan honoring the Ravellenic Games. Fifteen of the squares represent the different events in the Games – Afghan, Bag, Cowl, Frogging, Garment, Hat, Household, Mitten, Scarf, Shawl, Sock, Spinning, Sweater, Toy Toss and WIP’s. The extra square represents Bobicus (in honor of Bob) who hands out the medals at the end of the Games.
I used game colors and found that the darker colors do not show the design as well, so I recommend sticking to lighter colors. I went down a size in needle (from a 7 to a 6), however if you knit loose, I recommend going down to a size 5 needle – to help with stitch definition.
In blocking, I blocked to a size 11” square, but sometimes it felt like I could have stretched them more.
I’m using a 3 needle bind off to finish my afghan, picking up 51 stitches along the side of each square and doing a 3 needle bind off. After joining squares to make 4 rows, I will then pick up stitches along the long part of the row - 51 per square plus 1 or 2 in the seams - then do the 3 needle bind off for the rows.
Finally, I’m applying an I-Cord edging by picking up one stitch, casting on 5 stitches, knit 4, slip 1, knit the picked up stitch, pass over the slip stitch. I’ll do this all the way around - doing 3 rows of plain I-cord in each corner.
NOTE: While doing the I-Cord edging, - be sure to pay attention to how tight you are knitting. I will add stitches (pick up a stitch in the same place I picked up the previous stitch) approximately every 4 to 5 stitches. On the sides I plan to pick up a stitch approximately every other row, picking up an extra stitch between rows about every 4 to 5 rows. I hope this helps.
