My contribution for the Phat Fiber Sampler Box December 2012 “Nordic Culture”
Odin’s informants in Norse mythology were two ravens, Hugin (Thought) and Munin (Remembrance). They traveled the earth every day, gathering information, questioning everyone, even the dead. Somewhat like an ancient internet. At night, they returned to Odin and reported to him. The Raven Shawl is a light companion for modern information gathering at your computer. An arrangement of diagonal mesh, garter stitch separation edged with I cord, evoking a Raven’s wings with a longer center section representing the Raven’s tail. It fits the curve of your neck and shoulders well without pinning, although one can be used if desired. A good alternative to the cardigan thrown over the back of your chair
The Raven shawl is a small shawl worked in one piece in 2 parts, beginning with provisional cast on, knit to end of first side, in short row sections, then begin the second half by removing provisional cast on, place stitches on needle and attach yarn to work the second side and mirroring the first half. Worked in a simple diagonal mesh, alternating between left leaning and right leaning and short rows, the shape created is an elbow length small shawl that curves to hug the shoulders. The bottom edge is a series of points, with the center back point being larger than the points on either side, evocative of a raven’s wing span and tail. Applied I cord edging finishes the borders and the final finishing is only 4 I cord stitches to be worked together.
The instructions are written line by line with the mirrored instructions for the second side written out rather than the “reverse instructions for second side” one sees in patterns from time to time. The Raven pattern prints out to 9 pages.
