This collection of shawls, Teachers With Class, was designed to give thanks to three teachers from my youth ~ my high school french instructor, my piano teacher and my violin teacher. In addition to the substantial difference teachers make in their students’ lives, I wish to thank each of them for some seemingly small things that had long lasting influence on me.

This design is for my violin teacher. A pianist and violinist, she had a lifelong career as school music teacher while providing private instructions on both instruments as well. Throughout my high school years, she brought my technique on violin along in spite of my minimal practice sessions, even giving lessons on the phone when I had a performance approaching. She persistently encouraged me to listen to recordings of professionals playing the pieces I was learning. At the time, I viewed this as attempting to copy someone else, so I didn’t do what she asked. Many years later, I decided to concentrate on improving my piano performance, and I remembered this persistent suggestion and began to heed her advice. I then realized that listening to other performers could influence my style by providing ideas for interpreting the music. I improved significantly, and now find this activity invaluable, especially when learning a new piece. I thank her for persisting, for she knew what I did not know then ~ that emulating others would greatly enhance my performance and enable me to enjoy my own ability more than I ever expected.
Some favorite artists for inspiration: Vladimir Horowitz, Arthur Rubinstein, Michael Rabin (violin), Victor Borge, The Five Browns, Evelyn Chen, Hilary Hahn (violin), Christopher O’Riley
Ravendale is designed for well-deserved relaxation. It is a shallow crescent shawl shaped without short rows ~ simple garter stitch and a lace edging make it suitable for any yarn weight up to aran. The stitch pattern naturally creates a subtle scalloped edge which blocks nicely. You can work either from charts or the full written instructions. Be sure to adjust your yarn requirements when substituting yarn.
Materials used for sample (weighs 130g):
