Ravenna 24-18
This design was inspired by the topography of the Niagara Escarpment. The layers of stitch patterns represent the sedimentary rock of the escarpment, while the motifs of the lace stitch patterns represent the fossils found within the rock. You can play around and have fun with the order of the stripes (see Notes). Originally knit in a DK weight, tweedy blend of wool, alpaca and viscose , which gives the shawl a rustic feel, the simple shaping and regular stitch patterns mean that the design would translate well to yarns of different weights and/or fibres. I suggest you experiment (i.e., swatch) to find a fabric you like with an appropriate balance between yarn and gauge.
The techniques you will need to know--or learn--to complete this project are:
- cast on and bind off;
- knit and purl;
- M1 increase;
- yo increase;
- k2tog decrease;
- ssk decrease;
- cdd double decrease.
(Situated atop the Niagara Escarpment), the hamlet of Ravenna may look like a dot on the map, but a visit to the Ravenna Country Market for food and travel advice will prove otherwise. Amazing cycling, hiking, apple picking,
and wine-tasting are all just a stone’s throw away!
