Knuckle ink is the only time I’ve had a tattoo idea that my husband has made that slow, supportive-but-maybe-don’t-do-that head shake of the long married. This is a way for me to try out the idea before I go all permanent. And these are the two things that I wished everyone in the world could, and would, do.

The palm design is Morse code for “Read” and “Vote,” repeating on alternating lines.

This is a pattern converted from Classic Mittens Pattern #615, published on Free Vintage Knitting from Gloves and Mittens, Volume 29, Bernhard Ulmann Company.

These mittens are knitted from the cuff up, in the round (with the exception of the thumb, which is knit flat). The colorwork is stranded throughout and I have some suggestions about how to tackle longer floats included in the instructions.

The other finishing work is weaving in ends and sewing a small bit of seam down the thumb. The pictures show the middle of this seam being left open, so you can pop your thumb out to use your phone, but you can make that gap any size or close up the whole seam. Instructions are included.

Measurements
Medium size, blocked dimensions are:

• Cuff: 2.5 inches across, 3 inches long
• Bottom of cuff to fingertips: 10.75 inches

Worsted weight yarn: 2 skeins (one per color) Berroco Superwash Ultra Wool 3.5 oz. / 100g or 219 yards / 200 m per skein
(To knit in the round using the magic loop method) US Size 4 circular needles, 24 inches from tip to tip
Two stitch holders or scrap yarn to hold 20 stitches at a time
