Reed is a wide scarf/wrap/shawl that converts into a cozy cowl with the use of buttons--it’s broad enough for a wrap, but can be neatly closed up to keep the ends out of the way in winter.

The main motif is an improvised non-lacy textured alternative to other wave patterns, and makes a generously sized rectangular shawl/wrap when worked to the listed dimensions. It shows off the color transitions of a self-striping yarn very nicely! This is easy to make into a longer wrap if you feel like it, so feel free to customize it--just be sure you have enough yarn on hand!

This pattern was designed deliberately to be knit from handspun, so be prepared for fiber weights to vary a bit. I’ve calculated yardages carefully, but I haven’t knit a commercial-yarn sample yet. Offhand, two skeins of Noro Silk Garden Sock should work up into a Reed with some yardage left over as insurance against yarn chicken.

You’ll need:

-Straight knitting needles, or one 29” circular used for flat knitting, in US5/3.75mm-US6/4.0mm or size needed for gauge,
-620 yards of heavy fingering-weight yarn
-7 buttons (5/8”-7/8” depending on the technique you use)
-tapestry needle for weaving in ends

Optional:
-thread & sewing needle for attaching buttons, if needed
-crochet hook
