The Refuweegee Hat supports Glasgow-based charity Refuweegee, who help forcibly displaced people receive a warm welcome in Scotland.

All pattern sales between October 2024 and March 2025 will go to Refuweegee. In addition, there is a KAL running between 12 October 2024 and 31 March 2025 (#refuweegeehat), where we all knit the pattern and donate the finished hats to Refuweegee, who will add them to their Welcome Packs and their free shop. All the information (including donation drop-off points), as well as a video explaining everything can he found on my website.

About. The hat is a simple 2x2 rib design with flowing decreases. There are two brim options to choose from: a single-folded 2x2 rib brim or a double-folded Stockinette stitch brim. The design is kept simple to make this a relaxing and quick knit.

Skill level. The pattern is written with beginners in mind and there are two help videos available for extra support. A complete beginner might find it a bit too tricky but anyone who has knitted one or two things before should find this a rewarding challenge. There is also the option to learn a more advanced cast-on for the single-folded 2x2 rib brim, if you’re up for it.

Construction. The hat is knitted bottom up in the round. It is designed to end a few cm (abut one inch) above the crown. However, head length can vary between wearers, so it’s best to check the final hat length against the wearer head length before starting, making adjustments as desired. The “Pattern Notes” include a brief description on how to adjust the hat length.

Sizing. The size range includes Baby (Child/Teen, Adult), XL Adult (schematic with measurements are in the image). The single-folded 2x2 rib version will stretch enough to fit a head that is 5cm (2”) larger than the stated wearer head circumference for the given size. The double-folded Stockinette brim will stretch 2.5cm (1”) larger than the given wearer head circumference since Stockinette stitch fabric has a bit less stretch.
