Regatta Socks
UPDATE: As of June 30, 2014, this pattern is no longer available. Thank you to those who knit Regatta Socks; I’ve enjoyed seeing your projects!
Technical Notes
The construction is toe-up, beginning with Judy’s Magic Cast-On; increases are accomplished via kfb. The stitch pattern incorporates a Central Double Decrease to produce the sailboat motif. A Double Stitch Short Row Heel is used, which produces a somewhat narrow heel. The cuff is completed in ribbing and Jeny’s Surprisingly Stretch Bind-Off.
The pattern is written for one long circular needle and Magic Loop. A note is included for distributing the stitches across two shorter circular needles or a set of 5 DPNs for knitters who prefer to work with different needles.
Sizing Notes
Instructions are included for knitting the socks in four sizes, corresponding to the following foot/leg circumferences:
Small: 7 in
Medium: 8 in
Large: 9 in
Extra Large: 10 in
Please ensure the accuracy of your gauge in order to obtain a fit consistent with the above measurements. The elasticity of the fabric knitted in this design is greater than that of a highly cabled fabric, but less than a very lacy fabric.
Design Inspiration
Lake Canandaigua in the Finger Lakes region of New York served as the inspiration for this sock pattern. The Inn on the Lake in Canandaigua is the site of the Knitter’s Review Retreat and the Canandaigua Yacht Club holds its annual J DAZE Sailing Regatta on the Lake. The Lake has come to symbolize my dual interests in knitting and sailing, to which this sock pattern is dedicated.
