Remembrance Poppy
by Claire Ryan

This design is based on the Canadian version of the Remembrance poppy, being four petals, a black centre, and no leaf. In Canada, the poppy is the official symbol of remembrance and is a common sight everywhere from the end of October to November 11th.
This pattern is for beginners. It’s written without abbreviations, in plain language. I have included a crochet chart for crafters who prefer visual references.
Techniques used:
- The magic circle start
- Chain stitch
- Single crochet
- Half double crochet
- Double crochet
- Slip stitch
Recommended tools:
- US Size 1 / 2.75mm crochet hook
- Small darning needle
- Small safety pin
Recommended yarns:
- Sock yarn or fingering weight yarn, in black and blood red. Merino superwash sock yarn works well, and this is a good way to use up whatever scraps you have left after making socks. This will make a soft, matte poppy.
- Mercarized cotton crochet thread, size 5, from Hobbii or similar; this will produce a more shiny poppy and it will be a bit more durable.
Recommended gauge
- Double crochet height: 3/8 inch, or 1cm
- Finished badge measures 2.25in or 6cm across at the widest point
In memory of all those lost to war, in Flanders fields…
