Based on the lovely shawl Claire wears on her trip with the MacKenzies, this design features intarsia stripes for an interesting knit. Use a kilt pin, other decorative brooch, or shawl pin to close at the front edge.

I selected yarn that was readily available in the United States. The base of the shawl is knit in almost an entire skein of Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool (brown heather). The stripes were knit using Paton’s Classic Wool - about 1/2 skein each - Black and Jade Heather.

PLEASE NOTE: The Lion Brand Fishermen’s Wool is described as both Aran and Worsted weight yarn. This is very important to know as it will affect your gauge. I found the Fishermen’s Wool to be lighter weight than the worsted which was a little confusing to me. You will notice a slight difference when you switch to the Paton’s Classic Wool Worsted - but it works for this shawl, especially when blocked.

This pattern employs the following knitting techniques: knit; purl; knit 2 together; slip, slip knit; short rows; concealing short rows; garter stitch intarsia and yarn management.

There are many interpretations of this shawl out there. I spent a lot of time trying to puzzle out the best version I could. Please note that the key elements include:

  • Neckline edge
  • Side-to-side construction
  • Stitches slanting up towards center of neck (not down towards point)
  • Intarsia stripes
  • Basic garter intarsia (e.g. you will see the yarn on both the right and wrong sides)

I hope you enjoy knitting my Outlander recreations as much as I enjoy creating them.
