These quirky colourful flies with their simple smiling mouths are proof that anything can be cute if you give it big enough eyes.

A Rescue Fly is a fun, fast make that’s great for stash-busting and markets.

This beginner friendly pattern includes detailed step-by-step instructions, links to video tutorials and lots of photos.

As well as the pattern, there’s a PDF with my printable ‘Fly to the Rescue’ packaging, which you are very welcome to use when you gift or sell your Rescue Fly. This quirky packaging is a fun finishing touch for these simple toys and definitely increases their appeal. I also suggest giving each fly a name, so I’ve included a list of my go-to ‘fly names’ to help get your creativity flowing when you first start trying to name your fly friends.

To make a Rescue Fly, you will need:

  • 2 colours of yarn (the yardage given is for no.3 weight yarn, but you can use your choice of yarn) Colour 1: 12 metres / 13 yards Colour 2: 5 metres / 5.5 yards
  • Embroidery floss OR a scrap of yarn for embroidering mouth
  • 15mm safety eyes (if you use different yarn weight you will also need to change the size of the eyes)
  • Small quantity of toy stuffing
  • 2.5mm crochet hook (or hook that matches your crochet style/yarn weight)
  • Needle for sewing in tails
  • Scissors
  • Optional: Stitch marker for keeping track of the beginning of each round
