What I dreaded most about the prospect of chemotherapy? Losing my hair. It was the extent of what I knew before starting chemo. So, I thought I’d comfort myself (and wallow, a bit) by making a couple of hooded shawls.

This shawl -- hooded or not -- is a great little addition for the spring and fall when there’s a slight chill in the air, or in the summer when the air conditioning is too high.

This pattern includes links to video tutorials for the lace pattern and German short rows. (I learned them recently and am now a big fan.)

This pattern is the first of two shawls and two hats to be released in my Chemowear series.

Yarn Requirements
Two different colors of fingering wool or blend, approximately 860yds 786m.

• MC: 460y(420m)
• CC: 400y(366m)

You can also knit this in a combination of fingering (for the garter sections) and laceweight (for the lace sections); or all in laceweight. See sample in laceweight for more details.

Gauge
Gauge: in garter stitch, blocked
36 sts x 32 rows = 4”(10cm)

Needles
• US6 (4.0mm)
• US8 (5.0mm)
Choose a needle size that gives you a fabric you like in this stitch pattern.
