Retreat
I was in search of a warm sweater. Not just a sweater to keep the chill out, but one that would be better able to able to handle a wet, chilly Seattle winter. After various attempts and refinements, I decided to focus my efforts a little more on the stitch itself. I remembered a book on two-end knitting that had been languishing on the shelf. It seemed to be the perfect solution—especially when knitted tightly to help lock the alpaca in place. After earlier attempts, I knew a double-knit would be just the thing for the button-band/collar.
While I found the two-end kitting not to be especially difficult, it was rather fiddly (this from someone who does a lot of lace). Therefore, I would not consider this sweater to be a quick knit. I would also hesitate to use a pure wool yarn. You will notice that the gauge is quite tight. As well as providing warmth, the alpaca provides drape which helps prevent the fabric from turning into Kevlar.
