Retro Potholders
Double-layered retro inspired potholders in colorful cotton. The finished potholders are soft and supple, but still quite insulating. They work really well in the kitchen.
The front is made with spike stiches and half double crochet, which makes for a slightly thicker fabric. The back is a simple double crochet circle. Front and back are joined with a single crochet edging. You’ll be left with only a few ends to weave in, as the yarn is brought up on the inside of the potholder and tails are crocheted over as you go.
Disclaimer: Not the fastest potholders you’ve ever made. Also, a fair warning about spike stitches: they can be straining on your wrists, so do take breaks from crocheting if necessary.
The design is not my original idea, but inspired by MyNameIsBea’s beatiful Norwegian potholders.
Chart of front circle is provided as additional info. Note that you’ll have to refer to the written pattern for instructions on crocheting over ends, back and edging.
Beginner friendly Stitch Guide included, with photo instructions for reading fabric, making spike stitches and invisible fasten off with needle.
Yarn: Fingering/sports weight cotton, 5 different colors. You’ll use most of the main color yarn (about a skein or more for two potholders, depending on yarn weight and your tension) and a lot less of the other colors, so these can be scrap yarn. This pattern is written as a five-color repeat, but it works really well as a three-color repeat as well.
Hook: 3.5 mm (US E/4) or whatever gives you that ‘not stiff but not too lose’ fabric - for me it was a hook size over the recommended hook for my yarn.
Stitches used (US terms): ch, sl st, sc, hdc, dc and spike stitch.
