Knit a mitered-square-inspired cowl! Knit it as shown in worsted-weight yarn—the pattern is fully written out for this version—or use any yarn-weight and key measurements to knit a custom cowl.

RPPC is very handspun or scrap-collection friendly, and the result is pretty dapper. This project features multi-directional knitting and split fabric/vent details, and finishing is handled as part of the knitting process, so there’s nothing to really put off or dread if you hate going back to do seams.

Work is flat and in the round, so you’ll need to be comfortable with both techniques, plus increases and bindoffs.

For the blue and ochre sample shown, I used about 50g of the handspun blue and 37g of Malabrigo Rios in Frank Ochre. I consider the handspun a Noro-like yarn, so that’s something to keep in mind if you want to mimic the smooth/homespun effect in commercial yarn. (I am not convinced this is the best effect, though!)

Materials:

  • 250-300 yards of Noro Silk Garden, or your own handspun Noro-like yarn
  • 1 24”circular needle in US7/4.5mm, or size needed for gauge removable stitch markers
  • Tapestry needle

Gauge:
The gauge used for the sample cowl (in blue and ochre) is 16 sts and 32 rows over 4”/10cm in garter stitch, worked flat and blocked, in heavy worsted/aran yarn.
