Reverse Stockinette Ruffle Bag
I have never published or written any sort of pattern before, so please forgive any errors!
Anyway, a crochet group I belonged to really fancied a lovely purse from the film The Devil Wears Prada. It was designed by Fendi and though it was very expensive, it was knit using beginner techniques! My girls don’t knit, and I offered to come up with a pattern that a beginner could follow while staying as true to the bag’s form as possible.
Materials
Size 13 and 8 needles
2 Skeins of Hometown USA, Super Bulky
(I used charcoal gray, however they offer a colour called “Oklahoma City Green” that matches the movie colour)
1 skein Vanna’s Choice worsted (It looks like the colour “Kelly” matches well.
The Worsted Weight yarn is used for the ribbing and ruffles.
Notes on the bag in the film:
The reverse stockinette body is knit in the round and a bottom seamed into it. The mouth of the purse changes from reverse stockinette to a 1x1 rib, puckering the purse in a slouchy way.
The flap is knitted flat in reverse stockinette. It is edged in a ruffle that ends in a 1x1 rib. It looks to me like in the front ruffle, there are 3 separate sections where an extra increase is added to give it sort of tear-drop accent. A chain (?) or just a length of yarn is woven between the ribs and the ends that meet in the front of the purse are chained, and tied in a bow.
My Interpretation for beginners
Because this pattern was worked up for people who either haven’t knitted in years, or are just learning, I simplified it so they don’t get discouraged.
I chose to knit the pieces flat- to save grief. This bag is actually quite simple and there won’t be much seaming. I kept the original dimensions of the bag true using yarn from my stash that is easily available.
