“The Reversi Shawl is a generous wrap with a distinctive two-sided stitch pattern, vertical stripes on one face and horizontal stripes on the other, and looks equally polished from any angle. The graphic patterning is made from knits, purls, and slip stitches in highly contrasting colors; choose hues closer to each other for a softer effect.

Starting from a ribbed base, the body of the shawl is knit in the Reversi slipped-stitch pattern, with accent stripes and corded selvedges, decreasing every other row to the shawl point. Once the body is complete, an easy band of garter stitch is picked up and worked along the long edge, a calming counterpoint to the field of playful stripes. Weave your ends carefully and the finished shawl truly is reversible.“ — designer, Lis Smith

Construction

  • Shawl is worked flat from the cast-on edge, shaped with decreases at the end of every RS row.
  • The shawl has a slip stitch edge on both sides, 3 stitches on one side create a corded edge, and 1 stitch on the opposite edge create a neat selvedge.
  • A garter edging is worked along one edge after the main body of the shawl is finished, stitches are picked up from along the single slip stitch edge.
  • A portion of the hem ribbing will be put on hold during the knitting of the shawl body. These live stitches will be placed on a second needle and worked during the garter edging portion of the shawl.
