This is a reversible cowl with an owl flying through a pattern of flowers and twigs on one side and an optional quote hidden in the lining (which can also serve as a second cowl design).

The inspiration for this design was a favourite childhood book – The Owl Service by Alan Garner, which is in part a retelling of the old Welsh legend of Blodeuwedd, a woman who was created out of flowers for her husband (who is under a magic curse that he cannot marry a mortal woman), but who betrays him and is turned into an owl as punishment. I included a quote from Garner’s book, hidden in the lining: “She wants to be flowers, but you make her owls. You must not complain, then, if she goes hunting.”

It is a colourwork cowl worked in the round using a 3-ply/superfine/fingering weight yarn.

You will need 2 colours - around 50 g/ 287 m/ 314 yards/ of each shade.

I used a 2.25 mm / US size 1 / UK 13 circular needle.

The finished cowl is 28 cm (11 inches) tall and 59 cm (23 inches) in circumference.
