When the wind blows cold, a thick cosy scarf is essential! Ribbed stitch patterns create an ideal fabric to keep the winter deep freeze at bay.
The Reversible Rib Scarf was inspired by the stitch pattern Sailor’s Rib, featured in many stitch dictionaries. It originally caught my attention as it is the first stitch pattern listed in A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns by Barbara G. Walker. This stitch dictionary is a treasure trove for knitters.
Sailor’s Rib is simple to work, a combination of knit, purl, and twisted stitches. It creates a cosy thick fabric, the perfect choice for a scarf. To complement the Sailor’s Rib pattern, the bottom and side borders are worked in a 4-stitch left cross cable.
On the reverse side of the scarf, the bottom and side borders are worked in columns of 2-stitch cables (see additional photos on left). This is a perfect scarf for a man, or non-knitter, as the scarf looks handsome on either side!
Pattern was professionally tech edited by Robin Melanson.
