Reversibly Cabled Scarf
PATTERN NOTES:
Three variations on the scarf are offered—a flat scarf, an infinity scarf, and a wide cowl—with a choice of three yarn weights for each. Reversible cables are created using needles several sizes larger than would typically be used for the yarn weight. Confirm the needle size suggested is correct for your project by doing a gauge swatch.
WORSTED WEIGHT:
Needles: US 7/4.5mm and US 10.5/6.5 mm (smaller needle needed only for flat scarf)
Gauge: 14 sts/4’’ in Stockinette on larger needles
Yardage/finished measurements: 220 yds infinity, 6’’x60’’+; 260yds cowl, 8.25’’x24’’+; 440 yds flat scarf, 6’’x30’’+
ARAN WEIGHT
Needles: US 9/5.5mm and US 11/8.0mm (smaller needle needed only for flat scarf)
Gauge: 12.5 sts/4’’ in Stockinette on larger needles
Yardage/finished measurements: 240 yds infinity, 7’’x60’’+; 275yds cowl, 9.5’’x24’’+; 480 yds flat scarf, 7’’x30’’+
BULKY WEIGHT
Needles: US 10.5/6.5mm and US 13/9.0mm (smaller needle needed only for flat scarf)
Gauge: 11 sts/4’’ in Stockinette on larger needles.
Yardage/finished measurements: 260 yds infinity, 8’’x60’’+; 280yds cowl, 11’’x24’’+; 500 yds flat scarf, 8’’x30’’+
The flat scarf uses the smaller needle at the start and end of the scarf to control cable flare.
The infinity scarf and cowl use one needle size, and the ends are grafted to form the loop, using a technique that does not involve live stitches on the needles for grafting. A video of this technique is demonstrated here: https://youtu.be/AhI4y8zD5qA
