This sock is fundamentally a k2p2 ribbed sock, in which the ribs travel and intertwine in braids and cables. Unlike a typical ribbed sock, the cables cause the sock to “tighten” up, and there is less elasticity than you might expect. If the fit is uncomfortably tight, you may go up a needle size.

In addition, if you need a larger circumference in the leg portion, go up a needle size. If you have a particularly high instep, you may wish to begin your gusset increases earlier than the pattern indicates (there is a note in the proper place in the pattern).

One of the best aspects of knitting a sock from the toes up is the opportunity afforded to try on the sock as you go and make adjustments as necessary. At the gauge indicated, the sock fits me perfectly, and I wear a regular width size 7.5 US size shoe, and would describe my instep as average. My fabulous test knitter, Bonnie (who is modeling her socks on page 4), started her gusset earlier for her high instep and went up a needle size for the leg, and was happy with her fit.

This pattern was designed especially for Twist Yarn Shop’s Sock of the Month Club. Members will receive a free pattern.

Enjoy!

Bonnie has written a terrific blog post about how she made adjustments in the pattern to fit her high instep. Thanks, Bonnie!
