Ribbed Fingerless Mitts
This mitt is basically a tube of K3, P2 ribbing with a thumb! It is quite stretchy when completed so will fit a variety of hands quite well.
The construction of this mitt is a little unique. As in a traditional mitten, the cuff and thumb gore are worked first, but with this pattern, the next step is to finish the thumb. The technique used to cast on additional thumb stitches leads smoothly into the creation of a little gusset above the thumb which allows some ease in that area and minimizes holes on either side of the thumb. The upper hand is worked in the traditional manner.
This pattern is written with three different cast-on numbers. It can be used for different weights of yarn or for different hand sizes. Any multiple of 5 sts can be cast on and the pattern easily modified for whatever size suits you. The pattern includes some construction photographs in case my verbal descriptions are not clear.
The pattern Fingerless Mitts with a Beaded Cuff is the same construction dressed up with cables and beads.
