Ribbed Knit Hat for Amanda
This hat uses two colors, one for the cuff and another for the cap. For this hat, Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Black-White yarn was chosen for the cuff and Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling Black yarn was chosen for the cap.
Lion Brand Basic Stitch Anti-Pilling yarn is very soft but has very little stretch. Also, even though it is a 4-worsted weight yarn, when knit in stockinette, it created too light a weight fabric to be warm. The resolution was to hold two strands together, use a smaller than usual needle and a K1/P1 rib for the entire hat.
With a tubular cast-on, there is no “cast-on” look to the edge and the hat is completely reversible. Tutorials for two-strand tubular cast-ons can be found on You Tube. I found a good one at: https://youtu.be/Tsp60ohuLLE. I twist on the yarn for the first stitch, instead of using a slip knot, but the slip knot will not show.
This pattern can be made with one skein of the cuff color color, split into two balls per skein OR, for convenience, two skeins of each color can be used. There may not be enough of the cap color yarn to use a single skein, split in two.
1/5/2022 Note: To keep the edge evenly stretchy, instead of casting directly onto the US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needle, cast onto a US 8 (5mm) straight needle. Then transfer the stitches to the US 5 (3.75 mm) 16-inch circular knitting needle before knitting the first round.
