My home is in the Vale of York next to the River Ouse. Before the laying of the railways in the late 19th century the river was used to carry goods to and from the major port of Hull. Like the coastal fishermen, the boatmen of the River Ouse also wore ganseys. This cowl is inspired by the simple stitch patterns of those garments, featuring a twisted rib to echo the cables that always coiled in one direction, and a moss stitch diamond around the centre. Riccall is knitted in bouncy, cuddly West Yorkshire Spinners The Croft Shetland Aran which has great stitch definition. It is spun in Yorkshire from yarn which has travelled down from Shetland.
