The Rilla My Rilla hat is named for Anne of Green Gables youngest daughter, Rilla, from the series of novels by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery—one of my favourite authors from my girlhood days! The hat is inspired by a 1920s sewing pattern I came across online. I include a copy of the original instructions so that you can also try sewing a hat, if you like! The instructions and drawings will help you sew together your crocheted version, too. I made a sewn version using an upcycled, felted wool blanket—notes how I made it are at the end of the pattern.

Materials
I used about 80 - 100g of #4 yarn for each Average size hat. If you make a larger size you will need more yarn.

Sizes & Gauge
My gauge using the Patons Classic Wool Worsted and working in (Canadian/US) double crochet is approximately 2 rounds per inch/4 stitches per inch using a 5mm hook.
Women’s Average are the size of hats in photos; they are about 22 inches diameter without stretching. You can adjust the size further by using a larger or smaller hook, thinner or thicker yarn, etc. I have included 2 larger sizes—Large and X-Large, if you find you need to make it larger or if your tension is different from mine. Each will be about 1 inch larger diameter and 1 inch longer than the next smaller size. Try your hat on as you go, so you can decide if it is the right size for you.
