Ring of Purls Hat
I kept seeing a super cute hat everywhere this last winter, but I couldn’t find it for sale anywhere, so, of course, I had to make one.
This fun hat is my take on the CC hat (finally found it!), which is cute, but needed more interest. To give it more spunk, I changed the sections between the purl rows to a broken rib texture. I also added an additional (4th) set of purl rows which is incorporated into the decreases making the crown a little less boxy shaped.
I tried several different worsted yarns. Heavy worsted to aran weight made the cutest hats because there is enough weight and body to puff out the texture nicely. The three suggested yarns are all a heavy worsted and all run about 1.8 yards/gram
Right now there is only one size. It fits a size 21-22” head comfortably, so keep that in mind if you are making for a smallish size head. The entire hat works off a multiple of two, so it should be a fairly simple task to make a smaller version if you so desire.
I plan to modify for a S/M size and also a less slouchy beanie in the near future. Just to find the time…
8/6/17 - added a less slouchy version which eliminates the 4th purl rows section - still just one size and still slouch, just not as slouch.
Also it seems that I can’t remember what needle I put into the pattern. The ribbing calls for a US 5 (same for all hats), but it appears that I randomly used a size 7 or 8 for the body. Everyone in the shop likes the hat done with the 8 better, so, I guess, use whichever you like. US 8 resulted in a slightly loftier hat and a little less leftover yarn for a pom pom (if you make the slouchier hat).
Green - Simplinatural US 7 slouchy
Pink - Sueno US 8 slouchy
Blue - Simplinatural US 8 less slouchy
