REady for a project that you can do in between of your big ones? A perfect autumn beanie, easy to knit and fast to finish. And not just the hat is great, the pattern also contains instructions for a matching cowl.

Rintfear is the Frisian word for fern (the plant) and that is what this stitch reminds me of. Why in Frisian? Because this cute stitch comes from a knitting sampler found in the archives of Fries Museum in Leeuwarden (id. nr. sampler.: T1955-1018). The pattern is slanted and therefore very suited for working in the round. In the crown of the beanie I created a nine pointed star that emerges out of the Rintfear stitches. The band was created with a small cable stitch.

And while you are at it, why not knit a matching cowl as well? At the end of this pattern you’ll find the instructions to create a cowl and the calculations to adjust it to your desired size.

Rintfear is Fries voor varen (de plant) en daar doet de steek van de muts aan denken. Waarom in het Fries? Omdat deze verrassende steek gevonden is in een breirol van het Fries Museum (identificatienr. breirol: T1955-1018). Het patroon loopt schuin en daarmee is deze steek uitermate geschikt voor rondbreien. In de kroon van de beanie heb ik de rintfearsteek zo bewerkt, dat er een ster ontstaat met 9 punten. Het boordje is gebreid in een klein kabelsteekje.

En als je dan toch bezig bent, dan is het breien van een bijpassende col een kleine moeite.
