The Rio scarf is a light cabled scarf, perfect for cooler weather. The pattern is written for a medium-weight solid colour or gradient yarn. Variegated yarn will obscure the stitch detail. Although the pattern is written for a medium-weight yarn, you can knit it in everything from lace-weight up to chunky yarn.

The length is up to you - repeat the pattern until it’s the length that suits you.

I knitted up the scarf on 4.5mm needles (and a cable needle) in 1.5 balls of a DK-weight yarn, Hayfield Spirit, which is a gradient yarn and gives reasonable stitch definition. Depending on what weight of yarn you use and how long you want the scarf to be, you will probably need 1.5 - 2.5 balls of yarn, but YMMV (your mileage may vary).

The cable pattern is a 4-stitch cable that I saw on a 1943 bed jacket. Since I’m awfully fond of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers films and the ever-so-glamorous 1930s-1940s clothes, I named the pattern after their first film, Flying Down to Rio.

The pattern includes both written instructions and a chart, so you can follow whichever you prefer. If you have any comments or queries, please get in touch and I’ll get back to you as quickly as possible.
