Inspired by The Fibre Co. Almanac Series III “look to the seas” ocean theme. The Ripples & Waves Marlisle Hats are knit using the Marlisle technique popularized by Anna Maltz. Constructed brim to crown alternating between one and two strands of the oh-so-soft and luxurious Amble fingering-weight yarn for the color work.

MATERIALS
Yarn
The Fibre Co. Amble (70% Merino Wool, 20% Alpaca, 10% recycled nylon); 355 yds/325 m per 100 g hank.) Amble Mini (70% Merino Wool, 20% Alpaca, 10% recycled nylon); 88 yds/81 m per 25 g mini-skein.)
RIPPLES Hat
MC: Eden Valley (dark blue); one skein
CC1 Castlerigg (purple): one skein or one mini
CC2 Isel (grey); one skein or one mini
WAVES Hat
MC: Isel (grey); one skein
CC1 Castlerigg (purple): one skein or one mini
CC2 Windermere (blue)); one skein or one mini
Needles
US #3/3.25 mm and US #4/3.5 mm 16 inch/40 cm circular needle, or size to obtain gauge
US #4/3.5 mm needles for working small circumference in the round: DPNs, 1 long circular or 2 short circulars, or size to obtain gauge

GAUGE
24 sts/36 rnds = 4 inch square in charted Marlisle pattern stitch using using US #4/3.5 mm needles
Use a needle size that gives you the gauge listed as every knitter’s gauge is unique.

Finished Measurements: S: 19.5 inch/50 cm; M: 22.5 inches/57 cm; L: 24 inch/61 cm circumference.

TECHNIQUES & SKILLS REQUIRED
Knit & purl, cable cast-on. Increasing, decreasing, working in the round on circular needles. Working small circumferences in the round on DPNs/with magic loop with two circulars. Working from charts. Stranded colorwork; Marlisle technique.

PATTERN NOTES
Charted and written instructions. Knit brim to crown. The body of these hats are worked using the Marlisle technique. The stitches are worked alternating between using two strands and one strand of yarn. The yarn not in use is stranded (carried) along the wrong side of the work, similar to Fair Isle knitting. Keep floats very loose.
