From Nancy Bush’s Pattern Introduction These technique-filled stockings are named to honor my friend and helpful translator, Rita…(who) is an embroiderer and knitter of great skill. She has taken the patterns of her native Estonia and embroidered them onto cloth and knitted them into warm hand coverings, putting her love for her land into ever stitch….
These stockings begin with a Kihnu Troi cast-on, followed by a Kihnu Vits braid. Next comes a simple lace section, which causes the top to scallop. The colorwork section is typically Estonian—the Xs and Os are akin to Shetland patterning. The leg is decorated with clocks—one side is knit and purl, the other has vikkel, or traveling stitches.
