This hat is created in two pieces. First the brim is knit and joined into a band. Stitches are then picked up along one side of the band and joined for knitting in the round to work the remainder of the hat up to the crown. This hat is designed to be worn with the cable pattern on the side of the head for a vintage, 1920’s flapper style.

The great thing about this type of construction is that you can try on the band as you knit, to ensure proper fit. Likewise you can try on the hat when shaping the crown. For a more snug fit, you can always remove a few knit rounds in the decrease to shrink down less gradually.
