Knitting pattern for a slouchy, bottom-up hat with a swath of grassy ribs growing up over an easy mosaic of colorful stripes.

Yarn: DK, 6 colors: 260 yd (240 m) total. Scrappy stash buster - use yarn that makes you happy!

Main color (MC), about 200 yds (185m), best results from yarn with these properties: DK weight, (worsted or sport weight ok if fit gauge); solid color; springy, with good stitch definition; comfy to wear

Coordinating Colors (CC), 10-15 yds or m of each

Needles: US 5, 16-inch circular (3.75 mm, 40 cm), or your preferred style for knitting a hat in the round

Gauge: 22 sts & 25 rounds in 4” in twisted rib worked in the round, blocked but unstretched

Size: One size, adult. This is a stretchy design and fits a wide range of head sizes: 19-25” (48-63 cm). As written, this is a slouchy hat that is comfortably snug over anything from box braids to a ponytail to a buzz cut, while still keeping your ears warm.

This is a quick and fun knit for an adventurous beginner or beyond. This 14-page pattern includes explanations and/or links to tutorials for the special stitches, including mosaic knitting, twisted decreases, stretchy cast on, and so on; as well as detailed notes on customization options so you can comfortably knit the hat you want. Pattern language: English.

Important notes:

  • This is a digital pattern only, not a physical item. At this time I do not have the ability to provide physical copies of the pattern.

  • Blind or Low vision accessibility: Nearly all of this pattern is black text on white background, in a sans serif font size 11 or larger, and no italics or underlines except hyperlinks which are blue text underlined text. This pattern has not been tested with screen reader software. I am working on a low vision friendly version to make it more accessible. If you prefer a document written for low vision accessibility, please contact me so I can notify you when that version is ready. (Feel free to tell me if there are specific things about how a pattern is written that would make it more accessible to your vision needs.)

  • Pattern price: A lot of work went into designing this hat and making the pattern as easy to use as possible, and I have set the price that will allow me to continue putting this level of effort into future designs and patterns for you to enjoy. However, I know this is not necessarily an accessible price point for everyone. I am working on figuring out a way to offer a reduced price for those who need it. If you want to buy this pattern but find the listed price is uncomfortable for your budget, please contact me so I can notify you when I am able to offer a reduced price to folks who need it. (No need to explain your situation, just let me know that this price doesn’t work for you and what price does, and I will let you know if I can meet your requested price.)
