Riverbed Socks
There was a major pattern update as of August 31 2017, with the following changes:
- Design change to improve the look of the heels and insteps.
- Instructions added for a second toe shaping option.
- All charts have been standardised.
- Instructions have been simplified.
- I’ve added full written instructions. You no longer need to be an expert chart reader to complete these socks!
- All charts and written instructions have been formatted for ease of use on a tablet, whether you use Knit Companion or a PDF reader. This includes proper alignment on the page for two-at-a-time knitters.
I’m celebrating this update with a KAL, beginning September 19 2017. Come join in the fun in my group TGail Designs (http://www.ravelry.com/groups/tgail-designs).

Based on the lace pattern from the wonderful Hands of Blue gloves by Lucy Hague, Riverbed flows from cuff to toes. These socks feature patterned heels and a strong texture. Like the original gloves, they are knit snugly in order to show off the lace pattern. They look best in a solid, semi-solid or tonal yarn.
Level: Intermediate.
Skills Required: Pattern assumes basic knowledge of top-down sock construction, twisted stitches (both knit and purl), increases, and decreases.
Instruction Type: Fully charted and fully written. Formatted for ease of use by two-at-a-time knitters, and tablet users.
Construction: Top down, heel flap and gusset, grafted toe. Two toe shaping options are provided. The pattern is written generically so as to accommodate all small circumference techniques: dpns/ magic loop/ 2 circulars, both one at a time and two at a time.
Yarn: The pattern is written for all weights of yarn: fingering, sport, and dk. Go crazy and make one in each weight!
Needles: Size required depends on yarn weight used. 2.5/2.75 mm for fingering, 2.75/3.00 mm for sport, 3.00/3.5 mm for dk.
Size: Mix and match cuff size and foot length to get the perfect fit. The cuff has both a 60-stitch (small) and a 72-stitch (large) option, and the foot has both an average (U.S. size 7 ½) and a short option. Guidance is provided to help you choose the correct size combination.
Yardage: Yarn requirements vary depending on the weight of yarn used and the sizing options chosen. For the 60-stitch option in average foot length, allow 355 yds. DK weight, 330 yds sport weight, or 320 yds fingering weight. Longer feet and/or 72-stitch cuff will require more yarn, so plan accordingly.
This pattern has been thoroughly tested. I am very grateful to the people who took time to test the socks and pattern. Your comments, questions, and feedback were invaluable.
