The Rivers Reign Collection is inspired by myths, legends, and lore of female water deities whose stories taught generations to respect the water.

The Selkie Skirt is based on selkies, legends of the Scottish Isles often described as shapeshifters: seal folk who can walk in human form on dry land. The subject of many stories of love and loss, selkies often represent the duality of nature and the draw of the sea. In the most well-known tales, a man ensnares a selkie wife by stealing her seal skin and hiding it away. But as with all wild things, selkies can never truly be domesticated, and upon finding their skin, they always return to the sea, never to be seen in human form again.

Sizes (Waist in inches):

  • XS: 23-24
  • S: 25-26.5
  • M: 28-30
  • L: 32-34
  • XL: 36-38
  • XXL: 40-42

Note: The garment has positive ease to give the fabric its flowing appearance. It is fitted at the waist with an adjustable elastic band. Because of this, it is possible to adjust it for waist sizes smaller than 23” and larger than 42” within a few inches. The length is approximately 32-33”.

Suggested Yarn:

  • Bramblewood Yarns (3-ply Fingering Weight, 100 g - 500 Meters, 50% Cotton/50% Acrylic, Color: CA097)
  • XS: 1,000 meters
  • S: 1,200 meters
  • M: 1,400 meters
  • L: 1,600 meters
  • XL: 1,800 meters
  • XXL: 2,000 meters
  • Note: The pictured skirt is knit in a medium size for a 29” waist. It was knit using 1,400 meters of a 2,200-meter CA097 cake which includes the colors mocha, beige, jade, light petrol, and petrol. Because it used only a portion of the cake, it barely reaches the “light petrol” colorway and does not reach the “petrol” colorway. If you wish to match this colorway exactly, you may need to order a custom cake (mocha, beige, jade, and light petrol) or buy a larger CA097 cake.

Suggested Needles:

  • Two US 3 (3.25 mm) circular needles (30” Length)
  • One US 4 (3.5 mm) circular needles (40” Length)
  • One US 5 (3.75 mm) circular needles (40” Length)

Notions:

  • Scissors
  • Tapestry Needle
  • Stitch Marker
  • A length of 1/2-inch wide elastic to fit your waist.

Required Skills:

  • knitting and purling in the round and flat
  • yarnovers
  • directional decreases
  • casing
  • reading lace charts
  • making stitches three-needle bind-off

IMPORTANT NOTES:

This pattern is written using charts. A key with written instructions is given for individual stitches, but you must be able to read charts to complete this pattern. All charts are read bottom up from right to left and show odd-numbered rounds. Even numbered rounds are knit.

This skirt requires an elastic (or drawstring) at the natural waist to fit correctly. Without cinching the waistline, it will not sit as designed.

This skirt is worked in the round from the bottom up. Stitches are made and divided over two separate needles to create a casing for the waistband then connected using a three-needle bind-off.

Due to the nature of lace knitting, the skirt is see-through and the lining/undergarments are up to your discretion. For my own skirt, I salvaged a stretchy lining from an old dress and stitched it into the inside of the garment at the waistline.
